  • Car Rental Deposit in Malaysia

A deposit should feel understandable, not mysterious: you should know the hold amount, the card requirement, and when release starts.

Security deposits cause unnecessary stress when renters do not know whether the charge is a payment, a hold, or a temporary pre-authorization on the card.

The cleanest way to think about it is this: the vehicle rental price pays for the booking, while the security deposit is a separate temporary hold used to secure potential charges such as damage, fines, or unpaid tolls.

What deposit handling usually includes

For Kuala Lumpur rentals, a credit or debit card is commonly required for the security deposit. Current booking guidance in the site FAQ places the usual hold range at RM 200 to RM 500 or more depending on the vehicle class.

The hold is normally released after the car is returned in acceptable condition, but the visible release timing depends on your bank. That is why the practical question is not only the amount held, but also whether your trip budget can absorb the temporary hold during travel.

Questions worth asking before pickup day

  • Ask whether the deposit is a charge or a card hold : The distinction matters. A temporary hold affects your available balance differently from a captured payment that must later be refunded.

  • Check the expected deposit range for your vehicle class : A compact car and a larger MPV may not carry the same hold amount. Confirm the actual range before you arrive so the card limit does not become a last-minute problem.

  • Plan separately for tolls, parking, and late-return charges : These are generally renter responsibilities unless specifically included in the package. Budgeting for them separately helps you understand the final trip cost.

  • Keep pickup and return photos until the hold is released : If a dispute appears after return, those photos are the fastest way to support your side of the condition or fuel record.

Deposit amounts by vehicle class

Vehicle classTypical deposit rangeExample models
EconomyRM 200 – RM 300Perodua Axia, Perodua Bezza
CompactRM 300 – RM 400Perodua Myvi, Proton Saga
SedanRM 300 – RM 500Honda City, Toyota Vios
SUV / MPVRM 500 – RM 800Perodua Aruz, Toyota Avanza, Proton X70
PremiumRM 800 – RM 1,500Honda Civic, Toyota Camry

These ranges are indicative and vary by operator. Some companies offer lower deposits as a competitive advantage — MJ Adventure Travel, for example, starts deposits at RM 200 for economy vehicles. Always confirm the exact deposit for your chosen vehicle before pickup day.

Credit card versus debit card for deposits

Most operators prefer credit cards for deposit holds because the pre-authorization does not reduce your actual cash balance — it only reduces your available credit limit temporarily. With a debit card, the held amount is frozen from your checking account balance, which means that money is genuinely inaccessible until the hold is released.

If you must use a debit card, confirm two things: first, that the operator accepts debit cards at all (some do not), and second, that your account has enough balance to cover both the deposit hold and your travel spending for the duration of the rental. Running low on accessible funds during a trip is a common source of frustration for debit-card renters.

How long does deposit release take?

Once you return the vehicle and the inspection is complete, the operator releases the pre-authorization hold. However, the time it takes for the released funds to appear back in your account depends on your bank, not the rental company.

Typical release timelines by bank type

  • Malaysian credit cards : Most Malaysian banks (Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank) release pre-authorization holds within 3-7 business days after the operator processes the release.

  • International credit cards : International cards (Visa/Mastercard issued outside Malaysia) may take 7-14 business days. Some banks require you to call and request manual release of the hold.

  • Debit cards : Debit card holds can take 7-21 business days to release, depending on the issuing bank. This is the main reason credit cards are recommended for rental deposits.

If your deposit has not been released after 14 days, contact the rental operator first to confirm they have processed the release on their end. If they have, contact your bank with the rental agreement and return receipt as supporting documents to expedite the release.

A transparent deposit policy gives renters room to plan their trip budget with confidence.

Why deposit clarity improves trust

  • Most deposit anxiety comes from uncertainty, not from the hold itself. When the amount, card requirement, and release process are explained early, renters can plan around them calmly.

  • Before pickup day, confirm the expected range, the accepted card type, and what extra charges remain outside the base rental price. That makes the booking decision far easier to compare.
